Cheerleaders stuck in elevator - pass out
8/6/2008

Newsroom

Fear and panic for some teenage cheerleaders attending a special cheer camp at The University of Texas.

Campus police say 26-girls attending a cheerleading camp at the University of Texas thought it would be "funny" to pile into an elevator at Jester Hall - to see how many people they could get inside.

Officials say the elevator was jammed packed with girl's ages 14-to-17 and the elevator became overloaded and malfunctioned.

Some of the girls used the cell phones to call 9-1-1 for help. There were trapped for about 30-minutes like sardines.

Several passed out in the cramped stunt.

Hah. The student who was the secretary of my SHRM group in college got stuck in an elevator, and instead of waiting for help, tried to climb out. She fell four stories to the bottom of the shaft and died.

What astounds me is that the group then decided to create a stipend IN HER HONOR "to help financially disabled students have the funds to sit for the PHR exam."

So. . . the moral of the story is that elevators are evil and doing retarded things means other people get money.

OMG, that is completely stupid!!

I'm only down with that if other people do stupid things and *I* get money.

I don't know if you can read the byline on that image, but it says:

Take the stairs. Take the stairs! For God's sake, TAKE THE STAIRS!!!

Comedy GOLD, I'm sure ;)

I read that late last night! Very hilarious. Though the original report said it was only 20 minutes. Which is even funnier that some passed out after such a short time.

my daughter was there for UT band camp and she said they also tried a similar stunt, but the elevator would not work...

maybe they need overload sensors calibrated?

but those bubble heads won't do THAT any more...

I went on a Cozumel cruise with a friend a few years ago and that was about the only fun to be had on the ship for kids over the age of 10 and under the drinking age. So there were ALWAYS teenagers in the elevators, stuffing them, or playing '7 minutes in heaven' or whatever.

I empathize, but I still gotta laugh.

And I'd never trust any of those old dorm elevators!

I didn't either. They were always doing weird things. The worst was when one was binding or something and it was shaking moderately violently on the way down. I made it stop at the next floor and got out and walked the rest of the way. Another time I requested seeing the maintenance records and couldn't get past the date when the last safety inspection was done. Not inspiring confidence.

I'll bet the reporter got at least one thing wrong in that story. There wasn't a malfunction. If an elevator is overloaded it WILL stop to make sure it doesn't burn the motor out. It's designed that way. There's a weight limit on there for a reason. And yes, those girls will be running the world in 20 years. Hopefully somebody will have stuffed some brains in their heads by then.

That was stupid.

I used to ride those Jester elevators all the time (you don't want to climb up 10 flights more than once a day, really you don't) and if everyone on the elevator is wearing a backpack and you observe reasonable space rules, sure, you can "pack" it, but not that dangerously.

Sheesh.
