You don’t know anything real about anyone you only know through social media, so you are right to take everything you read online with a grain of salt.

If you have dealt with a narcissist in real life, you may develop a sort of ‘spidey sense’ that tells you when a person’s online persona seems “off” or ‘fake’ —some signs may include having thousands of friends in social media ('friend-farming'), posting tons of selfies, posting memes about being a 'crazy bitch' or  'wine mommy,' lots of spiritual/feel good/quotes from famous people as opposed to actual stuff about their real life, cognitive distortions such as ‘all or nothing’ type thinking, never admitting to flaws or mistakes, never apologizing for being in the wrong or hurting someone else’s feelings, seeing themselves as a victim and others as the perpetrator in every misfortune, etc.

Trust your instincts and do not engage with people who set off your spidey sense. If you read something online that seems helpful or resonates with you, feel free to integrate that advice or knowledge and use it as you see fit, but don’t give your time, attention, or especially money , to people who seem untrustworthy. If something seems fake, false, or untrustworthy, then trust your instincts and move along away from that person.
