Because it works! Most people are very distressed to be shut out and ignored by someone they care about, respect, or love. Normal humans crave connection, recognition, and interaction.

Just think of narcissistic supply as money. How would you feel if you found out that you could receive unlimited quantities of cash by doing *absolutely nothing*? Wouldn’t you want to take that deal?

That’s what the narcissist has discovered about treating his/her victims as though they don’t exist. The target begs, pleads, sends emails, texts, calls, gifts, apologies—unlimited narcissistic supply. They don’t have to lift a finger. Their target does all the work of second guessing themselves, punishing themselves, going through grief and agony and heaping it up like gifts around the narcissist’s throne.

It’s really a simple equation of how to get the most out of someone with the least amount of work. And narcissists are nothing if not lazy.

Rest assured, they don’t care about their targets distress, self-doubts, or anything else that is happening, they just care about knowing they are the center of that person’s attention, focus, and energy.

Drop the rope, quit playing. The only reason they do it is because they know it works on you.
