Can a narcissist act on his delusions?
Jul. 29th, 2020 12:16 pmNarcissists do live in a land of their own delusions. For a narcissist, feelings=facts. They believe that their actions are always justified and that they are above laws and rules about normal human behavior. They will often have delusions about being chosen by God or in some way morally or intellectually superior to others, which they feel gives them the right to behave in abusive ways, to be in control of others, etc.
I have heard, read about, and seen narcissists act abusively towards others based on dreams they had (“I dreamed you cheated, so now I am going to wake you up and scream at you for hours about being unfaithful to me”), based on television shows they were watching with their victim (“You think that character on TV is more attractive than me, so you aren’t allowed to watch that show anymore!”) and decide that they know things about people plotting against them based upon things like hearing a certain song on the radio, randomly opening a Bible and pointing at a verse with their eyes closed, and/or phone psychic or Tarot Card readings.
One Cluster B of my acquaintance has chosen to interpret their spiritual holy book as instructing them that it is OK to hurt or even kill someone they feel is a threat “in order to prevent True Harm” to themselves, whether that person has actually threatened them or is currently threatening them or not. If they perceive someone to be a threat, they have interpreted their scripture as allowing them to harm or kill that person.
So, yes, you can safely say that the narcissist is always acting on their own delusions rather than basing their behavior on objective reality as it stands.
However, narcissists are mostly cowards; they have no problem with threatening violence and talking a lot of S*** (especially on social media) but in general they tend to goad their flying monkeys into doing the actual dirty work. The only possible exception being their own kids, pets, and members of their household that they know won’t hit back or call the police.
