How the does that even work?....you reach up your hoo-hoo, dilate your cervix in some way, then root around in all that ....stuff... and find the umbilical cord, and then cut it, with whatever implement you've managed to get up your vagina and past the tiny opening of your cervix.

Yeah....that could totally happen.

(Thank you God, Jesus, Virgin Mary, Satan, and allllll the little boobie goddesses for my Essure and Ablation. So grateful this will never happen to me!)

I know little to nothing

Other than what I've managed to overhear and not-brain bleach at various baby-centric gatherings, but isn't there something called pre-eclampsia that may better explain this situation?

Just thinkin out loud here...

She's 7 months along, "her water broke," and the hospital determined the umbilical was cut.

I am not a doctor, and have only had about two semesters of real schooling remotely related to the practice of medicine.

My dumbass theory, so far, is premature labor (water breaking, cervical dialation), but Something Awry happened, with the umbilical coming out first. She freaks, grabs some sort of kitchen implement and starts tugging, which tears the umbilical.

Or, she had help.

Yeah, I could see something happening with a prolapsed umbilical cord.

That's about the only way I can see it happening, is with a prolapsed umbilical cord -- and even if it's not cut, there's a decent chance the baby is going to die anyway.

(I am not a doctor, either, but I've read about an insane number of things that can go wrong with pregnancy, labor and delivery. And I want to totally bitch-slap any doctor who is dismissive of either the signs of preterm labor or preeclampsia, but that's not germane to this discussion.)

Oh, and E., you probably don't want to click on that link, but someone else might find it helpful in their understanding.

I have a hard time believing that a (sane) woman would do this herself. Even when the Dr.s start messing around with your cervix to check the baby it huuuurts (in a bad way). I wonder why they don't suspect the baby daddy of anything?
I also wonder why, when domestic abuse causes women to "miscarry," the law does not usually considered this murder of the fetus (even if late term), but when they suspect the woman of causing it, it is a felony?

wtf indeed

I'm still in shock over this story. The more I read on it, the more my little brain wants to shrivel up :(
