I'm tired today. Sweetie played my least favorite bedroom game last night: "throw my covers on the floor and then steal my sweetie's!"--playing tug-o-war all night was not very restful. And it was cold, too! Very chilly for end of March.

I finished Alas, Babylon yesterday and started on Kiln People.

Alas, Babylon was...sad. I think I read it once before when I was 13 or 14, and ended up spending the summer drawing plans for fallout shelters with my little boyfriend Marc. Reading it again was bittersweet, because it made me remember my childhood, but also made me mad. The author gives a nod to civil rights (in that sort of racist bigot "I love black people--I even trust them to come in & clean my house when I'm not home!" kinda way) but doesn't seem to think anything of putting all the women in this book in the role of wife/mother/cook/housekeeper/servant. Even *gasp* when a woman assumes control of the government because all the more worthy higher up males in government have been killed, it's just kind of a slap in the face to feminism. Amusing/sad. Kind of like trying to re-read Heinlen now that I'm a grownup. My mom was right--all his female characters are helpless screamers & "mindless boobs". But I really loved his stuff when I was a kid. Back before I figured out I wasn't going to grow up to be a man.

Anyway...Kiln People is...okay so far. I like the premise: that in the future you can copy yourself and send your copy to do the dirty, stupid stuff you don't want to do, and send your 'original' body to go do whatever you want: shopping, gardening, partying with friends, whatever. Not sure I really care for the plotline as of yet, but I do like the idea.

Today someone at work is wearing one of those super-sweet ungodly perfumes. I think it's an Oscar De La Renta or Estee Lauder fragrance. I just want to cauterize the inside of my nose, it is burning and tickling so bad. She just dumped a pile of crap on her desk which shook the walls of my cube. Nothing fell down, thank goodness. Oh, and now she's singing. Yay. I just love my job and all of my lovely coworkers. I need to put on my headphones and tune her out. I wish I had a clothespin for my nose.

PS: Check this out. So glad I never joined Weight Watchers!
