The highest excellence is like that of water. The excellence of water
appears in its benefiting all things, and in its occupying, without
striving, the low place which all men dislike. Hence it is near to
the Tao.
The best [man] is like water.
Water is good; it Benefits all things and does not compete with them.
It dwells in [lowly] places that all disdain.
This is why it is so near to Tao.
Lao-tzu, The Way of Lao-tzu
In the world there is nothing more submissive and weak than water.
Yet for attacking that which is hard and strong nothing can surpass
it.
Lao Tzu
-------------
Water overcomes the stone;
Without substance it requires no opening;
This is the benefit of taking no action.
Yet benefit without action,
And experience without abstraction,
Are practiced by very few.
---------------------
Nothing in the world is as soft and yielding as water,
Yet nothing can better overcome the hard and strong,
For they can neither control nor do away with it.
The soft overcomes the hard,
The yielding overcomes the strong;
Every person knows this,
But no one can practice it.
Who attends to the people would control the land and grain;
Who attends to the state would control the whole world;
Truth is easily hidden by rhetoric.
