Hoovooloo: Sounds like you want a Palm Zire.
evile: I think it fails on the 'you have to buy scads of extra crap
to attach to make it do what you want" test
Hoovooloo: No, it comes complete. The only thing you might want to
add is a bigger memory card to hold more pictures/MP3s.
Hoovooloo: It'll take Outlook calendar information. I haven't looked
    hard enough to find Yahoo!
evile: Hm. I was under the impression that I woul dhave to buy cords,
cards, and 'cradle' for what I want.
Hoovooloo: Takes 1.2M pictures, check. Plays MP3s, check.
Hoovooloo: When I bought my Palm III it came with the cradle. I think
it's only the cheapest-possible ones that come without.
evile: is this the palm thingy with the blue gunk on it that flakes
    and peels off right away?
Hoovooloo: I have not heard that. I don't know.
evile: If I can just peel that off right away and not worry about it
getting everywhere, no problem, but if it's not a quick solution and
I have to tolerate the thing having leprosy I dont' want it.
Hoovooloo: In the box : Palm, case, hotsync cable, power cord,
stylus, Software on CD, instruction guide.
evile: 'hotsync cable' being the thingy to plug into my comptuer so
it can suck up my lists of shit to do and calendary stuff and what
    have you?
Hoovooloo: Easy enough to find out, if the display model in BestBuy
isn't peeling, then it shouldn't be a problem.
    Hoovooloo: Exactly.
evile: the one I saw at best buy looked pretty mangey, obviously I
can't test it to see if I can get everythign to peel off cleanly.
evile: I hate being ignorant, but I am lazy and I don't care enough
to learn all teh jargon. I just want a thing that does what I want it
    to do.
Hoovooloo: I want one of these things as a reward for finishing my
degree (nine weeks, but who's counting?)
Hoovooloo: I want to make sure this thing will take someone else's
flash card. Kerry had one of the Palm Treo's with a 2GB card in it,
    that's useable for MP3 playing.
Hoovooloo: Okay, good. It takes standard SD cards.
evile: And sales people like you stupid and defensive, ecause then
they can sell you shit you don't need.
Hoovooloo: The only reason to go into the store is to abuse the demo
model to get an impression of how big and heavy it is.
    Hoovooloo: Buy online.
evile: *nod* that's what I was figuring, but I want to get something
I know I will be able to use, that will do what I want it to do.
Hoovooloo: Okay, a 1GB memory card for these is $70. A 2GB memory
    card is $210.
evile: it says it has bluetooth. someone said bluetooth is bad. I
    don't know why.
Hoovooloo: Yeesh, Kerry is an early adopter.
Hoovooloo: I'm sure you can turn the bluetooth off. You'd need
another bluetooth something for it to talk to. The hotsync cable will
    still work.
    evile: hm.
Hoovooloo: There are Windows competitors for these. I don't trust
    Windows with much.
    evile: nope.
Hoovooloo: I want one that can go online using 802.11 wireless
ethernet, like I have at home and in the office.
evile: whee! Your babbling is entertaining!
Hoovooloo: I do my best to entertain you.
Hoovooloo: Your new icon is positively naughty, BTW.
    evile: I liked her.
Hoovooloo: Very much a "What's new with Phil & Dixie" vibe
evile: a what with what and who now?
Hoovooloo: A cartoon by Phil Foglio that used to run in Dragon
    Magazine when I was 12.
    Hoovooloo: http://www.studiofoglio.com
    evile: Oh, OK then.
Hoovooloo: Featured a small purple dragon that multiplied when it got
wet, and every month they tried to do 'Sex in Role-Playing Games' but
    something would stop them.
    evile: aha.
evile: I wouldn't put it past roninjedi to have read something like
    that.
Hoovooloo: The one I remember is "The censors say the girls have to
be wearing more!" / "But those are the biggest hats I could find!"
    evile: *laff*
Hoovooloo: Looks like Yahoo used to give away a tool for sync'ing
Yahoo Calendar with a Palm, but now sell it instead.
evile: I think I remember that.
evile: I get more than my money's worth out of Launchcast, so I
probably wouldn't mind, assuming the price was reasonable.
Hoovooloo: There's a shareware product that'll get your Yahoo!
Calendar into the Palm format. It's $15 to buy.
evile: that's not bad, but it does violate the 'extra crap' rule.
    Hoovooloo: Well, yeah.
Hoovooloo: Are you good with spreadsheets?
Hoovooloo: I've found instructions to move the information from Yahoo
to the Palm if you massage the file with a spreadsheet program.
evile: that sounds suspiciously like WORK. I can do it, but I won't
    like it.
Hoovooloo: Oh, hang on. Now I've found somewhere that claims
Intellisync is a free download from Yahoo!
Hoovooloo: Huzzah. It is free of charge.
evile: I was really hoping someone would pipe up with "I've got a
_____ and it does all that and it's great!"....
Hoovooloo: So your Yahoo! contacts and Calendar should just sync up
    with the Yahoo! software.
Hoovooloo: I've been using a Palm III for phone numbers, calendar,
notes, calculator, book-reader and solitaire player for four years.
Hoovooloo: It's too old to play MP3s or take pictures though. You
need a new one for that.
evile: hmm. I will check it out.
Hoovooloo: This Palm we've been looking at does everything you've
listed, and will do it all as shipped, out of the box.
evile: I will definitely check it out.
Hoovooloo: I'd want to add a bigger memory card, and those are
cheaper if you don't buy them from Palm.
Hoovooloo: At $299 ( -$50 rebate) You'd have enough in your budget to
    add a 1GB card.
evile: I have memory cards that go with my digital camera. If the
palm takes those, that would be cool.
Hoovooloo: Are they the really itty-bitty SD cards or the larger
    CompactFlash cards?
    evile: Compact Flash sounds correct.
Hoovooloo: Those wouldn't cross over then. What model of camera is it?
    evile: Kodak, something or another.
Hoovooloo: Has Sweetie got an old Palm Pilot lying around? They do a $50
    credit for upgrading as well.
evile: He had 3 last time I checked.
Hoovooloo: You should spend a few minutes playing with one. They all
have the same calendar and contact software.
    evile: they're not mine.
Hoovooloo: he's using all three? I would assume at least one or two
are obsolete and sitting in a drawer.
evile: oh, all three of them are obsolete/broken, and somewhere in
his work room. White girl don't go in there.
Hoovooloo: Sounds perfectly reasonable to me.
Hoovooloo: Wish I had a work room.
Hoovooloo: I could call part of the basement a work room if the
    ceiling were more than 5'6".
    evile: ouch!!
Hoovooloo: I can stand up, but only if I avoid the joists, pipes and
    light bulbs.
evile: Moving into a house where we each get our own room to make
giant messes in was definitely a peace-maker for us :)
evile: Most houses in TX don't have a basement at all...that's so
    wierd to think about.
Hoovooloo: They don't need them, the ground doesn't freeze there.
evile: nope. We didn't get a freeze at all this year, I don't think.
Hoovooloo: You have to put the foundation of a house below the freeze
line in the ground. Houses in the Carolinas get crawl-space sized
basements for that. In New England you have to go a whole basement
    down.
Hoovooloo: And on that note, it's my night off. I'm going home.
evile: *hugs* have a good night off!
