I love 3 day weekends! I had a great time. Yoga on Saturday a.m. with
e. (she is always late, so we don't even sit next to each other,
but whatever...the yoga itself is good for me, so that's fine). the
GWNN party was Saturday night and my friend Sir M (who goes to poly
group also) showed us his collection of toys and later demo'ed them
for me :) And then I got home to find my sweetie still awake & I got
lucky! ;P
Sunday we slept in. Sweetie made breakfast & coffee, and we ran some
errands, then went and saw "Amelie" at the drafthouse downtown Sunday
evening.
Monday I had breakfast & shopped with Aunt L, we went back to her place
to divvy the loot, then we called mom & talked to her for awhile (she
is realizing that Brother A does not recognize her efforts in his
direction, as far as quitting her job & coming to take care of the
new baby, talking about finding something closer so she can be there
for him,etc. Sad but gratifying)
Monday night, we had girls night out with the usual craft nite
bitches, but we went to dinner instead at this family style Italian
place. I never feel that good paying so much for Italian food, since
I can make it so much better & cheaper myself at home. But the
atmosphere was fun, the company was delightful, so I enjoyed that
very much.
As we were wrapping up the bill, Sweetie called & said he and Max were
headed out to Baskin Robbins, since Max wanted 31 scoops of ice cream
for his 31st birthday. I invited the gals to come with, and my friend
Nikiyoy took me up on it, so off we went to celebrate with Max. There
were 7 of us and we actually finished off the giant pile of ice
cream...that was so fun and entertaining. Some of the flavor
combinations (bubble gum and chocolate, strawberry and creme brulee)
were dreadful, but we laughed and ate it anyway. It was a hoot and a
half.

here is my actual reply:
I did not realize that this upcoming weekend is the house & garden
show, so the only thing that would really work for me would be
hitting brunch directly after class.

but I felt like saying something snarky like "gee, I'd love to starve
for 2 hours waiting for you to go to breakfast with me..."

I know - I love 'em, too! It was great to have an
extra day with Shane! He can't always stay Sunday
nights, either, so we had quite a bit more time
together than we ordinarily would have.
The highlights were a Port tasting at K&L Wine
Merchants (our favorite wine shop), and the
Steinhart Aquarium, both on Saturday. I'd never
been to the aquarium before; it used to be in GG
park, but is now, temporarily in SOMA (South of
Market), sort of near Moscone Center/Yerba Buena
Gardens. K&L is a few blocks down fourth street,
so we decided to combine the two trips.
We saw some really cool animals at the aquarium -
some hilarious newts who would swim around and
then suddenly stop, and stay in that frozen position
for minutes at a stretch, and a gigantic bass, who
seemed unusually interested in all the people
looking at him.
After that, we headed down to K&L. We were just
going to pick up a couple of bottles and head home
- we didn't even realize they were doing a Port
tasting. We were lucky to hit on it, because they
only do it once a year! The Ports (all 10 of them)
were quite interesting (only one we didn't care
for) and the people watching was unparalleled. There
were a couple of groups of friends/acquaintances/whatever, obviously
led by
their chief wine nerd - pretentious asses in both cases. Shane and I
were quite amused. It was a
big, lively, diverse bunch of people. Lots of fun.
Along with the tasting list, they handed out a really excellent
glossary/summary of the different Port styles. It is the best,
clearest summary
thingy I have ever seen. I scanned it and I am
attaching it for you. It definitely cleared up
some mysteries for me, so I hope you can use it, too.
The highlight of the tasting (no. 10) was vintage Port from 1970,
though there were some excellent tawnies as well. The best value was
the Krohn LBV
(no. 3), which we bought and finished over the long weekend. We even
had some while watching the Colts-Patriots game on Sunday. :)
Anyway - if you can find that LBV, you should definitely pick it up.
It has fantastic fruit flavors, good tannic structure (but not too
tannic) with the barest hint of butterscotch. Try
http://www.klwines.com, but I don't know if they
can ship to Texas.
Other than that, we took Pepper to the park -
first
time in weeks because of all the rain - had a few
meals out, and sacked out in bed. Oh, we watched
Shrek, which I loved. I hadn't seen it before.
Very cute.
We didn't get around to the naughty schoolgirl
thing, but we did have an absolutely lovely bubble
bath. :)
Sounds like you had a fantastic weekend, too! I am
not exactly ready and thrilled to be back at work,
but whatever. It's a good, slow day so far.
Love,
J-Law

Thanks so much for the tasting info! It sounds like
a
great time!
I've had the Dow LBV, at one of the TRF wine
tastings,
and we really liked it. I am wondering if a bottle
of
port exactly my age would be a good way to celebrate
my big 35 (and Sweetie's big 31 :P)...I've priced port
and
$139 is not outrageous. I am betting that the higher
alcohol content might be a problem in shipping to TX
(crazy blue laws!), but I can always ask.
Your weekend sounds like a great time, nice laid
back
sweetie time is always a wonderful thing! Now you
have
to see Shrek 2--you will love Antonio Banderas as
Puss
in Boots!

That 1970 Dow was spectacular. I think that would
be a really nice thing to have for your 35. It
still had plenty of nice caramelly flavors, good
fruit, and a dryish, clean finish. I'll have to
copy Michael Broadbent's tasting notes for you. He
has notes on all of the vintage Ports we tasted -
after we got home, I looked them up. :)
I can't believe Shane's going to be 37 next week.
It occurred to me that we have the first third of
the year packed with important dates: his bday in
Jan., Valentine's, my bday in March, and our
anniversary (1 year - eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!) in April.
Not to mention, all of the things we want to do/go
to.
It was a good weekend. It started off very nicely,
too. We had a caviar tasting at the firm wine hour
on Friday. :) Shane has never had caviar, so one
of these days, I am going to pick up one of their**
American caviars (I think it's a sevruga) - only $35
an ounce, which is really excellent, comparatively
speaking. :)
** the company is called Tsar Nicoulai. They have a
fabulous shop in the Ferry Building. Tasting menu,
champagne, small plates for lunch. They import some
caviars, but, primarily, they raise the sturgeon on
a "farm" in Northern California. The caviar is just
as good, I think, as anything from Russia or Iran,
but it is a lot less expensive. Better for the
environment, too, since they aren't doing anything
with wild sturgeon.
I am dying to see Shrek 2 now. I'd heard about
Antonio Banderas, and the other folks sound
hilarious as well, esp. Jennifer Saunders (from Ab
Fab) as the Fairy Godmother.

Thanks for the website info! As it gets closer to the
date, I'll definitely be looking to get me some 1970
B-day port! I love that my birth year was a vintage
year :)
Y'all are going to have such a great time celebrating
Shane's bday! Perhaps that would be a good time for
the naughty schoolgirl to make her debut ;)
I've heard about the sevruga, and they carry it at
Grapevine market, but I haven't tried it yet. I guess
I will need to pick an occasion & give myself an
excuse to buy it.
I'm not very motivated here today. I did find an
accessory for my next GWNN party outfit on ebay, so
the day hasn't been a complete waste. One of the gals,
Maggiemaepisces, comes from very big Old TX Money and has a bunch
of vintage furs she inherited from her mother and
grandmother. So we were thinking to attend the next
party in furs, jewels, and nice lingerie. I get to be
Miss Garnet, so I'm going with burgundy accents on the
lingerie. I have a pair of black thigh high stockings
with burgundy bows, and found burgundy opera length
gloves on ebay to match. I will probably just go with
black heels, black corset & black panties to finish
off the look. One thing I've found in common with all
the various hobbies & groups I have--dressing up :)
I found a funny quote in somebody's Livejournal this
morning. He didn't attribute it, but I'm pretty sure
it is not his own idea:
TEN COMMANDMENTS: The real reason that we can't have
the Ten Commandments in a Courthouse... you cannot
post "Thou shalt not steal", "Thou shalt not commit
adultery", and "Thou shalt not bear false witness" in
a building full of lawyers, judges, and politicians.
It creates a hostile work environment.

J-Law:
Very funny quote! Shane and I saw a good one yesterday at Vesuvio (a
very cool bar in North Beach - it's an old SF institution, but I'd
never been): "San Francisco: 49 square miles surrounded by reality."
Too, too true. Sometimes in a good way, sometimes in a bad way.
We went there for drinks after having burgers at Mo's, another
institution. Unfortunately, while we ordered them medium, they came
out mooing. We'd already doctored them up with stuff, had a few
bites, etc., so we didn't feel like we could send them back. :(
Everything tasted very good, so we might go back... but we're going
to order them well done. Anyway - after that, we could both use a
drink (we went to North Beach initially to check out the Savoy-
Tivoli, a bar Shane and his buddies went to in their youth, i.e.,
they were underage. Unfo, it was closed for the holiday).
Your outfit sounds fantastic!!!! I love the fur and lingerie
combination - sexy and luxurious.
I'll need to break out my corset, etc. for Shane sometime; maybe for
v-day since it is red. I was thinking schoolgirl for his b-day;
great minds think alike!
I am not sure when we're going to do the caviar. That (and
Champagne) is something I would do for an impromptu celebration of
something I just made up. :)

It's funny, because the vegetarian girl in our group is the one who
suggested the "bitches in fur" theme.
But, my theory with vintage fur is the animals would have been dead
of old age long ago, so why not enjoy them?
I can't remember the other gems...there are 4 of us who go to GWNN
and M has 4 vintage jewelry pieces to accessorize with. I know I'm
Miss Garnet, and I think the others are Aquamarine (Niki), Amethyst,
and I can't remember the 4th. foo. Oh well.
I got a nice email from the Dom who shared his toys and expertise
with us, following up to see how I was doing, which I thought was
really nice. He seems like someone I could really learn from, which
is really great. Reading about it is just not adequate.
I just realized, reading your list of occasions, that Sweetie and I will
be celebrating the 10th anniversary of our 1st date in June! wow...I
had it in the back of my head but to think about it, for real...is
just WOW.
