Disclaimer: I’m not a therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, or professional counselor. I’m not seeing Depp in a professional capacity as a therapist or counselor, so take this with a grain of salt.

My armchair diagnosis of Depp is that he’s avoidant, passive-aggressive, codependent, and an addict. These personality traits (possibly could be classified as personality disorders) put together would make an incredibly nasty person to be involved with.

People with these traits and habits don’t follow through on their promises, they aren’t reliable, and they don’t give straight answers to seemingly straightforward questions. At the same time, the codependent tendencies on top of that almost drive them to be in a relationship where they are enabling another person to be the absolute worst version of themselves, so that he can feel like a ‘savior’ or a ‘fixer’ of that person. Unfortunately, his ex wife’s comorbid personality traits/disorders were a toxic mix that he could not fix or save, and led to him being the worst version of himself, as well.

He apparently had very poor adult role models growing up—a physically and verbally abusive, drug dependent mother and an avoidant, passive father who would do things like come home from work and dish out beatings to his children because his wife told him the children needed or deserved beatings. And then he just skipped out on his family one day without a word because he’d had enough of his wife’s abuse.

This relationship with a woman who also seems personality disordered (substance abuse/addiction, histrionic personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, codependent) seems to have pushed him in the direction of seeking help for his substance abuse. I hope he will stick with a program of detoxing from drugs and alcohol and also get help for his avoidant, passive aggressive tendencies and whatever anger management he needs as well.

I hope his ex wife will also work on her own issues. Borderline personality disorder is very difficult to overcome but for the sake of her child and whoever she ends up dating or married to next, I really hope she works very hard on herself.
