Narcissist-to-English is very easy to translate if you remember the childish games played in Elementary school, most specifically “backwards day” or “opposite day,” when kids enjoyed pranking & teasing (also bullying and tormenting) one another by saying the opposite of what they meant. Kids would go up to a cute girl or boy and say “I hate you!” on opposite day, or go torment an ugly unpopular kid by following them around and insisting that “I LOVE YOU! Will you marry me?” etc.

When an NPD says “I love you,” at best it may mean that you are in the short golden honeymoon period of idealization before a discard. What it means, most likely is “I hate you but you have something I want/ need so I am pretending to care about you”

When an NPD says “you’re cheating on me!” that means they’re cheating on you.

When an NPD says “You’re lying to me!” that means they’re lying to you.

Get it?

SO, when an NPD says “I’m not afraid of you” that means they are terrified of you, possibly because you have something they want and they can’t figure out how to take it away from you, or because you know something about them that they feel would be harmful if you shared your knowledge, or some other cockamamie reason.

The reason doesn't matter as much as you might think. The bad thing is that if you continue to engage with them, they may decide to do you harm based on how threatened they feel by you. So when a crazy person is telling you that you don’t frighten them, it is probably best to mildly agree and then avoid them.

Another possible interpretation of “I’m not afraid of you” is that they are putting on a show for their followers/flying monkeys. They ‘stand up’ to you, you big mean bully meanie you, and then smear your name behind your back to paint you as a threat, an abuser, etc. and then their flying monkeys do the rest, to destroy you in revenge for ‘scaring’ or ‘hurting’ their dear and lovely Narcissist. They’ll feel completely justified in destroying anyone in this way because in their minds you did something first, to threaten or frighten the NPD, even if all you were doing was living a good life as the result of your own hard work, intellect, and focus.

Stay away from a NPD who admits you frighten them in this backwards childish “opposite day” way. They are dangerous and unpredictable, the next step will be retaliation for whatever you did/said to ‘frighten’ them. You, your pets, your professional reputation, etc. may not survive whatever they do next.
