It does seem that Narcissists and their supply/flying monkeys certainly bring out the worst in each other; they allow, enable, and encourage one another in the most atrocious behavior imaginable.
There definitely needs to be a defect of character for a person to stick around a Narcissist and either cheer for the narc’s abusive nuttery or allow themselves to be ‘egged on’ to perpetrate horrors of their own.
And, in later stages of a relationship between an NPD and his or her target (s) it does seem to devolve into a situation of mutual abuse and disrespect.
At some point, we all need to be responsible for our own choices and our own behavior. As difficult as it may be, there is always at least one moment of clarity in an abusive relationship where the target sees exactly what is happening. At that point, he or she makes a choice to continue or leave.
Continuing is a choice to remain in ‘victim’ status, to continue the enabling and continue their own destructive behaviors as well. There are many reasons (and some of them are merely ‘excuses’) that they stay with a narcissist, but one of them may very well be this ‘permission’ the narcissist’s presence grants for them to behave in vile, cruel, and awful ways as bad or worse than the narcissist’s own behavior.
In some ways, the supply’s behavior is worse because the supply at least knows that what they are doing is terribly wrong. They know how to behave properly and they choose to do evil instead, in order to please and appease their abuser but also because at some level they probably do enjoy it.=======================
