evile: so what's the scoop on Sketch?
    Hoovooloo: What do you mean?
evile: Oh, I just heard that 'everyone' was feeling sorry for him,
and I was wondering if there was a reason for that, or just in
    general :P
    Hoovooloo: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-
    /B0009NN6EA/qid=1119978556/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-9340225-2386331?
    v=glance&s=dvd&n=507846
Hoovooloo: I haven't talked to him in a week or so. Last time we
spoke was after he missed my graduation party. He'd been at a
convention selling copies of his documentary.
Hoovooloo: Coal came. She appeared to be in good spirits.
    evile: that's good :)
    Hoovooloo: http://notes.nicoleandjason.com/archives/000084.html#more
Hoovooloo: Aha. Nicole's livejournal has something about Jason's
    grandmother in a coma.
    evile: dang.
    Hoovooloo: That's my best guess.
    evile: well, that's sad :(
Hoovooloo: That's also news from mid-May.
Hoovooloo: Who all was the bearer of woe tidings?
evile: Nobody specific, Rhino said he went to a gathering and
everyone was talking about 'poor sketch' and he didn't want to hear
it...so I figured he was not the one to ask why sketch was 'poor'
    Hoovooloo: Huh.
Hoovooloo: Well, I haven't talked to anyone on TIM for ages (I
actually logged in last week, but everyone there was idle.)
evile: I logged in a while back, but it was very quiet.
Hoovooloo: It took Dory's Mom to point out that my graduation BBQ was
    in fact on Lag Day.
evile: I was flying thru MSP on Lag Day.
    Hoovooloo: MSP?
    evile: Minneapolis st paul
Hoovooloo: Oh hey, I finally saw the TinyTIM livejournal group a
couple of weeks ago, how was Rhiannon*'s wedding? [*J-Law]
evile: she's engaged. the wedding hasn't happened yet.
Hoovooloo: Is she a lawyer now?
    evile: 9/9/06
evile: she passed the CA bar, but she's working as a paralegal.
Hoovooloo: Sounds like a big wedding, with that much lead time.
evile: Nah, they are just wanting to pay as they go & not do a big
    debt thing.
    Hoovooloo: Emminently reasonable.
Hoovooloo: Do you approve of the future Mr. Rhiannon?
    evile: oh, yeah. He's a doll :)
evile: He is cute, sweet, smart, he treats Rhi very well, and I even
    like his family :P
    Hoovooloo: Good!
evile: I think so. She asked me to be the MOH, but I'm not sure how
much I will actually be involved with anything since they're in CA
    and I'm in TX
Hoovooloo: Jess got to fill in for an absent MOH three weeks ago.
evile: oy. I bet that was fun.
Hoovooloo: I even got roped into being a groomsman
evile: easier for guys--you just wear a suit.
Hoovooloo: Eight hours+ of 100 degree heat without AC. It was a real
    joy.
    evile: oh. ew!
Hoovooloo: I was eyeing the bare-shoulder/armless dresses on the
    bridesmaids with considerable envy.
Hoovooloo: And of course the tuxedo I own was entirely the wrong
style, had to rent another one.
    evile: *grinz*
Hoovooloo: In hindsight, I'm glad I didn't abuse my own tux with that
    day.
Hoovooloo: And the rental came with lifts! I got to be 6'6" for a day.
evile: *laff!* That is _exactly_ what you needed.
Hoovooloo: I had a small victory this weekend, I recharged the AC on
my car, marking my second attempt at auto AC service, and the first
    success.
evile: I didn't know you could do that yourself, I thought you needed
    a freon license or something.
Hoovooloo: Well, the unsuccessful (and much more involved) attempt
was to convert a broke R12 system to the legal-for-DIY R134a.
Hoovooloo: This time I had one antique can of R12 that bigheart
    bought circa 1990.
    evile: *nod*
Hoovooloo: The tricky bit was finding the correct hose and tap to add
    it to the system.
Hoovooloo: Between this and the fiddling I did with my father-in-law
and his brake lines, I'm feeling a lot more comfortable with high-
    pressure systems.
Hoovooloo: And, as you can probably tell, I'd rather be home playing
    with my car today.
evile: heh. Yeah. I can always think of stuff I'd rather be doing,
while I'm at work. Then I get home and hte Couch of Doom beckons...
Hoovooloo: Last night was lawn mowing
evile: ack. don't remind me. *adds another task to the list*
Hoovooloo: Followed by couch-potatoing and watching the DVDs of
    Firefly.
    evile: heh. yeah
evile: bunches of people are getting into firefly now.
Hoovooloo: We watched them when they were on (TiVo is good for
catching shows in bad timeslots). The DVDs arrived as a graduation
    gift.
    evile: oh, sweet :)
Hoovooloo: I was surprised by the graduation gifts. Really
    surprised. :-)
evile: But it is an accomplishment, so it's good for people to
    recognize that.
Hoovooloo: I see it a transition point, between people not believing
that I don't have degree, to not believing I have a degree from a
    good school.
    evile: *nod*
Hoovooloo: I get to look forward to exactly what I said to Woody on
seeing his degree, "You went to Harvard?!?"
    evile: *LAUGH!*
Hoovooloo: Funnily enough, I saw tk's name in one of my classes.
Hoovooloo: One of the CS professors needed a body of information to
manipulate in demonstration, and he was using on-campus student
names, dorm rooms and phone numbers from the early 90's.
Hoovooloo: Sure enough, there was Tom Kim.
    evile: OMG, too funny.
    evile: small world!
evile: cute LJ comment. That would be awesome :)
Hoovooloo: Yeah, I'm still bummed the cruise isn't leaving from there
    this year.
Hoovooloo: It's Tampa this year. Joy. Tampa.
evile: the last (only) time I cruised, wandering around NO and
wandering around Cozumel were the good parts. The boat itself...I
    could pretty much do without.
Hoovooloo: Sounds like we took the same boat!
Hoovooloo: I wouldn't want to cruise without an event on the boat.
evile: *nod* yeah, or a bunch of friends onboard to go and be silly
    with.
evile: boot the teenagers out of the elevator and play grownup
    7 "minutes in heaven" :P
    Hoovooloo: http://www.fanclubcruises.com/efo_pictures.htm
evile: OMG, that was totally the boat we were on. Carnival's
    Holiday :P
Hoovooloo: There were about 120 or so of the Ed-Heads on board. We
got the 'Doc Holidays' bar all to ourselves.
Hoovooloo: And each night we'd move from there to the Casablanca-
themed piano bar and take it over.
evile: that sounds like fun :)
Hoovooloo: This year it's on a bigger boat :
    http://www.fanclubcruises.com/efo.htm
Hoovooloo: I think there's a size limit to the boats that can get up
    the river to NOLA.,
    evile: probably.
Hoovooloo: This one is 120 feet longer.
Hoovooloo: I'm internally debating whether it's worth going to Tampa
for this one. It doesn't seem worth it to spend that long on a plane
to get to a 4 night cruise.
    evile: yeah...plus: FLORIDA.
    Hoovooloo: Isn't that a minus?
Hoovooloo: Last time we spent a week in New Orleans before the
cruise. Spending time in Tampa sounds a bit dull.
evile: Oh, I meant, one more chalk mark on the 'not worth it' side.
Hoovooloo: On the plus side, Kerry & Jill/Tigerlily are going, and
    they're fun to vacation with.
    evile: yeah.
Hoovooloo: Huh, I wonder if I could find a beach house within an hour
    or so of Tampa.
    evile: probably.
    Hoovooloo: Ooh, there's a tampa.craigslist.
evile: I've got friends who are craigslist junkies :)
Hoovooloo: I bought a rowing machine from the local craigslist.
evile: how do you like it?
evile: it's a great workout, but it hurts, and I'm a wuss.
evile: (when I belonged to a gym, they had one)
Hoovooloo: It's the same brand and model I was trained on when I
rowed crew for a year at GMU.
    Hoovooloo: A Concept D Erg.
evile: oh, so you're used to the pain. :P
Hoovooloo: Rowing is nice and low-impact. I tend to wheeze out rather
    than injure myself with it.
    evile: heh. 'wheeze out'
    Hoovooloo: Wheeze and callous.
evile: I never actually hurt while using it, but the muscle pain the
next day or so was always really bad!

    evile: hi :)
    SkyeDS: hey :)
    evile: busy day at work?
SkyeDS: Hugh has done something that prevents his WP from printing
    evile: oh, dear
SkyeDS: he can print with everything but, and I can print with
    everything including from my box
    evile: wow..
SkyeDS: given that, I sussed and sineater agreed that it was HIS wp, not
the printer or any other part of the system, hard or soft
SkyeDS: so we couldn't find what he'd done to his wp
SkyeDS: and we edited the registry
evile: yeah, sounds like...what a hassle.
SkyeDS: put his WP back to all default settings
SkyeDS: and it still isn't working
SkyeDS: so I'm going to have to tell Hugh to uninstall and reinstall
    the printer
SkyeDS: which I can't do because I don't know what he did with the
    driver disk
    evile: dang.
SkyeDS: and then he's going to tell me he doesn't know where he put it
SkyeDS: so then I'll spend the rest of the afternoon looking for
    drivers online
SkyeDS: and have to argue with him about yes, we have to uninstall,
we can't reinstall over, it needs to be clean
    evile: dang.
SkyeDS: and then we're going to have another unpleasant discussion
about his tendency to tinker with settings and put himself in this
    position
    evile: oh....ick.
SkyeDS: because if he doesn't stop, the only way to print documents
will be to let me print them from my box
    evile: and that's bad because....
SkyeDS: because he needs to be able to print what he wants when he
    wants for himself
SkyeDS: and I do NOT want him coming in here and messing with my box
    when I'm not here either
SkyeDS: because then I will have the same problems he does
SkyeDS: and nobody will be able to print anything period
evile: *nod* yeah. I can see you not wnatin ghim to mess with your
stuff, not if he changes stuff without warning.
SkyeDS: it's not like I consider my box my personal property
SkyeDS: it's his box, he paid for it
SkyeDS: but from a pragmatic standpoint, if he does to this box what
    he did to his, well?
evile: yeah...but you require a level of functionality to do your job.
SkyeDS: and I don't know what he did
SkyeDS: and by now he doesn't know what he did
evile: I'm super territorial about my cube. I know the puter isn't
mine, but I hate it when people mess iwth it nayway.
SkyeDS: when he comes back I think t he first thing I'll say, calmly
and quietly, is, you have to promise not to be angry and not to argue
SkyeDS: I can't fix this otherwise
    evile: *nod*
SkyeDS: managing your subordinates is a fine art
SkyeDS: managing your coworkers/peers is another fine art
SkyeDS: managing your boss (managing upwards) is a much finer art, it
    seems to me
    evile: heh. true.
SkyeDS: anyway, I suppose I have it easier than you do, I can
    talk "straight up" to mine
    evile: yup
SkyeDS: I just....everyone in the office knows I'm upset now because
the computers upset me so much that when I'm dealing with them I
raise my voice and I don't have good control over it
evile: Might be a good idea to take a break, walk around the building
    and breathe a bit.
    SkyeDS: nods
SkyeDS: that's why I'm not messing with it further till Hugh comes
    back
SkyeDS: I could just download the drivers online and do it myself
SkyeDS: but I'm tired of it
SkyeDS: and I'm thinkin I need to talk to him about this because it
    keeps recurring anyway
evile: yup. a lot of situations improve with some time and distance.
SkyeDS: instead of just fixing it and going on every time it happens
evile: is it possible that there's a program he uses frequently that
    defaults to some bizarre setting?
    SkyeDS: that's entirely possible
SkyeDS: he drives sineater nuts too
SkyeDS: he tinkers with stuff he has no business tinkering with and
downloads shit and I do my best to clean up after him running
    antivirus and spybot and adaware
evile: I know I sometimes get pop up boxes that say 'do you want to
save' or whatever, and I don't pay attention as much as I should.
SkyeDS: and I could argue that it's his machine and his business and
he can do what he damn well pleases
SkyeDS: but the bottom line is, he impairs himself and gets upset and
    I have to fix it
    evile: *nod*
SkyeDS: also, I think it would be a good idea if all the software was
in my custody, so when I have to reinstall, I don't have to ask him,
what did you do with it? because he never remembers
evile: yup. Just make files for them and keep them somewhere
    accessible, clearly labeled.
SkyeDS: somewhere accessible to me, not to him
SkyeDS: Dell and MS on their new machines now hide a bunch of stuff
so that endusers can't get at it easily
SkyeDS: and that aggravated the tar out of me initially
SkyeDS: because it was stuff I needed access to and it was a pain
    getting access to it
SkyeDS: but now I begin to understand why they did it
SkyeDS: to keep people like Hugh from doing exactly what he does
    evile: yup
SkyeDS: what on earth would he do if his assistant weren't extremely
    technological for an admin
SkyeDS: and married to a dell engineer besides
    evile: Heh :)
evile: ooh. Emuzeki is playing at Otter Chaos on Saturday! way cool!
    http://otters.sachaos.org/
    SkyeDS: who is emuzeki?
    evile: they're a very cool duo that I've seen at TRF several times;
they play a variety of very wierd instruments & they're just really
    good.
    SkyeDS: :)
evile: & they're both very pretty.
evile: I'm not sure...they might have been at Ingleside that year we
    all went.
    evile: http://emuzeki.com/
evile: ooh, Nadler's is still open. Lynn says they're not as good as
the original location...but it might still be nice to bring a cake
    for Mike.
    SkyeDS: I have acquired disk
SkyeDS: now if I can just keep him from meddling further until he
    leaves again
    evile: good luck!
SkyeDS: his best friend just lost his wife
    evile: oh...that's so sad.
SkyeDS: I steered him toward the phone, hopefully he'll stay on it
until time to go play racquetball
    evile: *nod*
    SkyeDS: ROFL
SkyeDS: now he's asking my permission before he does anything
SkyeDS: "may I at least edit things if I don't print?" "may I put
that file on my desk until I'm through with it if I put it back where
    it belongs when I'm done?"
    SkyeDS: ROFL
evile: heh. there ya go. enjoy it while it lasts :)
evile: We are very caught up at work, and I am very bored. Not good.
I'm going to get myself in trouble...
evile: I really wish I could just go home. I may sneak out to the
library..I wonder if anyone would notice.
SkyeDS: <dcc's you an invisibility cloak
evile: hee. that'd be SO cool :)
SkyeDS: especially in c onjunction with one of those time turners
that allows you to be in two places at once
evile: that would be very cool :) I saw one in a catalog. It is a
    pretty piece of jewelry.
SkyeDS: I s uppose going ot the boss and saying give me something to
    do is out
evile: oh, she's already gone. 'working from home'
SkyeDS: wish we could do that
    evile: yeah.
evile: theoretically, our system is supposed to be 'paperless' so we
could work from any computer. But that hasn't happened yet and I
    don't think it ever will.
SkyeDS: very little of what i do could be done at home
SkyeDS: arguably if we had a network that included my home computer
    that would change somewhat
SkyeDS: but I can't answer phones from home, or handle files
    evile: *nod*
evile: well, foo. So far everyone is being bland and polite. you'd
think that with the promise of anonymity & privacy, they'd be a
    little more interesting. Oh well.
evile: I guess bland and pleasant is better than "you fuckin' bitch,
I would put you in a meat grinder while you're still alive!!!!"
SkyeDS: are they usually any different while she's gone?
evile: Oh, I was talking about my latest LJ post. Not RL. :P
    SkyeDS: hadn't read today yet
evile: it's been very quiet all day. ....I'm soooooo bored!
SkyeDS: did sineater tell you that one of the Typsy Gypsies jumped my
    case?
    SkyeDS: at ESA?
SkyeDS: it was either one of them or one of teh Brujahs but I'm
pretty sure it was one of them
evile: when? that first/last time you went camping there?
    SkyeDS: I was freezing
SkyeDS: so I was wrapped up in every warm thing I had, and I had my
black beaded head scarf the bedouin name of which I forget
SkyeDS: wrapped all the way around my face
SkyeDS: one of them was drunk and thought it was a burqqa and threw a
    fit
SkyeDS: burqqas offend her you see
SkyeDS: the thought I had at the time was, suppose it was a burqqa,
and was representative of what I believe, who cares whether it upsets
you or not? what happened to the much vaunted pagan tolerance?
evile: was it one of these women?
    http://www.typsygypsys.com/indeximages/troupe%20header.jpg
SkyeDS: the dirty dishwater blonde one, I think
evile: the one at the end with the bottle at her lips?
SkyeDS: they were all so plastered that they almost couldn't dance
    evile: quelle surprise.
    SkyeDS: the other one
    evile: with the topknot?
SkyeDS: either her or the one between her and the bottle
SkyeDS: one of the two thin ones
evile: She wasn't there the 25th. Maybe she quit the troupe.
evile: The one with the tat on her belly? She's a rude bitch.
evile: I haven't had any direct dealings with any of the others, but
the one with the panther or whatever on her belly...yeah, I've dealt
    with her before. Not impressed.
SkyeDS: very, very rude she was
SkyeDS: the boys got real protective real quick
    evile: New York accent?
SkyeDS: Sonar0m wanted to maim, sineater wanted to kill
evile: I can't say I've been much impressed with many of the ESA
    crowd I've met.
evile: Or CMA, really, come to think of it.
evile: ESA seems to be white trash drunk hootchies and CMA seems to
be smelly white light fluffy hippies.
SkyeDS: I met the big brother of one of the only two exes that I"m
still friends with and spent the weekend babysitting his kids for him
for a hefty fee of course
    evile: *nod*
SkyeDS: and saw some of my very old friends that quit CMA a long time
ago - Tiny the Sumerian, et al
SkyeDS: helped them deal with the cops when they got called
    evile: *nod*
SkyeDS: of course, I liked seeing friends I hadn't seen in forever, I
don't believe I made any new ones, but <shrug>
    evile: yeah....
evile: I think I'm to the point where I'd rather just camp with
friends instead of go to big organized campouts.
SkyeDS: Shadowmist Kim msged me the other day
    SkyeDS: she's feastocrating CRW
SkyeDS: asked me, are the horses coming?
SkyeDS: um...no? the state park doesn't allow them. That's why I
gave sonar0m a list of SPs that DO allow them, along with about 300
other private sites including county fairgrounds (254 of those),
because I can't take the horses to a not horse friendly site
    evile: *nod*
SkyeDS: not that it's any big deal, once it got moved to the new
weekend it was out anyway because of previous commitments to another
    event and then a renfaire
evile: yeah. the weekends fill up way too fast.
SkyeDS: BUT you notice, we did not whine bitch moan kvetch complain
or so much as sniffle at the change of date or site
evile: I still havent' decided if I'm going. It's gonna be damned hot.
evile: ooh...Ladydreamtime says she might want to go to Hippie Hollow sunday
    before Poly 101. woo! :)
SkyeDS: never been. also never been to padre, enchanted rock, or
anywhere south of SA unless you count Ingleside that once
    SkyeDS: certainly not Mexico anyway
SkyeDS: I am not only depraved, I am deprived
evile: heh. I'd say you need to get out more, but you do get out.
    Just not out-out.
evile: well, it's finally 4. I'm outta here. Have a good evening :)
