My Foundation: I have freckles, so I don't normally use it. I wear SPF 30 or higher sunscreen every day and I have since I was in my early to mid 20s. I put it on after I get out of the shower in the morning. When I'm wearing makeup, I like DHC Velvet Skin Coat, usually just by itself but sometimes I'll put some 'ivory' tinted powder on over it. I got a Benefit "Confessions of a Concealaholic" kit a little while back but I just wasn't all that impressed. I do get dark circles sometimes and try to mess around with concealing them sometimes, but usually I just go out in the world with nothing but sunscreen on my face.
My Mascara: Whatever's cheap, usually, in brown-black or brown. You are supposed to throw it out every 3 months, and in that time I may use mascara 3 times...so I don't see a point to spending a lot on it. I hate the goopy clumpy stuff. Just a little bit of extra color on my lashes is all I really want or need.
My Blush: don't usually use it. I have a Cover Girl one I've probably had for too long that I use when I am wanting blush. More often, I go with glitter.
My Moisturizer: I just got this great stuff on etsy. That and sunscreen.
My Lipstick: Cover Girl "Outlast" when I'm dressing up and putting on makeup, or just a clear lip balm when I'm not. My friends at Abzu gifted me with a trial run of a really wonderful minty lip balm they're going to be making to sell soon. It's scrumptious!
My Shampoo: Dove or Finesse.
My Conditioner: None or Dove. I have some very light leave-in stuff that I use now and again if my hair is feeling dry or 'stressed'.
My Hair: I had dyed it since I was 16, kept it short since my late 20's sometime, and then quit coloring and cutting for a couple years and just let it grow out. The greys got a little oppressive, so I colored it to a natural dark brown at Xmas time. I usually just wash it and go. If it's cold, I blow dry it a little. I got some hot rollers for Xmas that are fun to play with but I don't use them every day. I'm told that my hair is so perfect that I'm intimidating to people...which makes me laugh a bit and also kind of sad.
My Soap: I don't have a favorite. Soap buying is part of my traveling perfume fetish, I browse etsy for stuff that sounds good, buy stuff at craft fairs or at Whole Foods or Central Market that smells nice. I like Dr. Bronner's lavender quite a bit, but it's not a "daily driver".
My Favorite beauty store: Brick and mortar: Sephora is fun for trying on, Ulta is usually where I make more purchases. DHCskincare.com online.
My Favorite Budget brand: Almay. I like their specialty eye makeup stuff for brown eyes.
My Favorite Premium brand: I don't have one. DHC, I guess?
My Essential Beauty Product: Sunscreen.
My Favorite Makeup Product: Velvet Skin Coat
My Perfume: This one varies. I love to try different scents. Prada is my favorite 'department store' perfume, but Coco by Chanel was my 'signature' for a long time before that. I like trying scents on etsy, I was a bit of a fan of BPAL (the scent descriptions were always SO much better than the scents, though! So disappointing!), Fantasy Bath, and my latest fun is Love Potion Magickal Perfumery. I wish that I'd gotten a full size bottle of Dirty Sexy when I had the chance. It is pretty much my favorite so far. But I always like trying new ones.
I generally tend to stay in the wood/spice/musk/foody vanilla/amber family of scents rather than anything floral, powdery, or soapy. I am super picky about Vanilla and Patchouli. Good ones are fantastic, bad ones make me unhappy.
My Nails: usually short and unpainted. I had fun with artificial nails at the New Year's Eve party I attended, though :)
My Feet: I don't like pedicures. I just generally keep my feet clean and my toenails short and leave it at that.
My Hands: DHC has a good hand lotion I got a while back with some AHA in it. I also use my Restoring Blend on my cuticles. I wash them a lot. Lucky they are not usually dry.
What Five beauty products could you not live without?
1. SUNSCREEN
2. shampoo
3. lip balm
4. perfume. I really like to wear perfume every day. I mean, of course I won't die without it but just for the sake of the meme, let's say this.
5. ummmmm.....does deodorant count?
What’s the worst beauty mistake you’ve made? I got a really horrible, very very short haircut just a few weeks before going on a once in a lifetime Alaska Cruise with Thax and Dree and many of her in-laws. There were tons and tons of pictures. I took wigs and hats to help but then the airline or the cruise line lost the suitcase with my wigs and hats so I just looked...scalped...in all the pictures. I think I still looked pretty cute though. (I am not sure this ws MY mistake, other than perhaps the timing. The hairdresser was going thru some bad times with her husband and I think she just did not pay attention to what she was doing when she was cutting my hair.) Other than that, I consciously chose to have a 'tail' during my late teens and early 20s (cut it off when I turned 21, very symbolic, I'm sure) and I am pretty sure I have had a mullet at least once in my life.
What does your daily skincare regime consist of?
wash my face in the shower, use an apricot seed scrub once a week or so, get out, put on oil and sunscreen, and thats' usually it. If I am doing any serious exercise, I'll wash after I'm done exercising and/or before bed, but usually just once a day. During the winter, I try to remember to also moisturize before bed with more restoring oil or some other product I keep around.
What does your daily cosmetics regime consist of? I don't wear cosmetics on a daily basis, just for things like job interviews or parties or going out to dinner.
Favorite Beauty treat? I like getting manicures every now and again. Maybe once a month or so.
What’s your “every girl must own one” item? I like Rkentspeth's answer: A good brain.
a sense of humor is also a fine thing to have. But I gotta say, I also like a good pair of tweezers. ;)
And finally, best beauty tip? I love, love love R's answer to this: Know your strengths and play them up, and minimize the things that you don’t like. Or, if you don’t care, then go with that! Seriously, though, I think it would be to live a healthy lifestyle. Eat properly, sleep enough, stay hydrated, exercise, minimize stress, maximize joy.
I really can't add much to that, other than maybe this: I think every person I know is beautiful in some fundamental way. Maybe not a magazine cover 'mainstream' beauty, but in a Real way that I appreciate and am grateful for. *MWAH!*
And now I go off to nap.

Date: 2011-01-20 02:40 am (UTC)I was once at an informal gathering where I ended up in a group of women. One by one, they bitched about their hair, something they didn't like about it. I kept my mouth shut, because I figured out what my hair likes and doesn't like some time before then, and part of my end of the deal is, I don't bitch about it when it's giving me no reason to do so.
So, one of the other women pointed at me and said, "I want her hair!"
And I thought, oh boy, this is going to get ugly in a minute, and I have no idea what to do....
And then a guy with longer hair pointed at a bald guy, and said, "I want his hair." Totally defused the situation, and I've been grateful to him ever since.
With me, hair is just hair, and if someone doesn't complain about their hair in my presence, I'm just as glad. :) I don't think you've ever complained about your hair in my presence, besides possibly stating the need for a haircut soon, and that's just one of those things that people have to do on some schedule or another.

Date: 2011-01-21 06:17 pm (UTC)I think in general, my philosophy of beauty can be summed up something like "if it looks like you're trying too hard, it's not pretty,"...I love to play with makeup [and costumes] sometimes and do really dramatic looks, but for the day to day...just relax and be comfortable.

Date: 2011-01-22 02:14 am (UTC)If I'm talking about a guy who has hit on me and I thought it was a little icky, I'm looking partly to find out if anyone else knows him, and if so, does he fall under "harmless" or "ick" so I have a better idea of how I want to handle it next time. (If he falls under "harmless", then if I'm just really not interested, I'll let him know straight up but as politely as "straight up" can be. If he falls under "icky", I'll be more rude about it. I just don't want to be really rude to "harmless" and I don't want to let "icky" down too gently. That last may be a character flaw there....)
I like your philosophy of beauty. :)
