I am really fascinated by the sentient "world" of John Varley's Gaia trilogy. I would absolutely love to party with the Titanides.

Titanides consider food and drink to be their highest art form, and they are all skilled in some handicraft and/or science. Oh, yeah, and Titanides are also quite musically talented, which means they can keep a beat in a drum circle (unlike so many humans at Eeyore's Birthday :P) so the music would be awesome, too. So: cooking, eating and drinking, dancing and singing and maybe titanide-back riding, crafting, being known and liked for who or what you are inside [or disliked for same]...pretty much my idea of a perfect life.

(yes, I'm aware that their entire society sounds like a Burning Man or Flipside kind of deal...only they are in a climate controlled, insect-free environment, and [more importantly] they don't have human problems like rape, murder, jealousy, etc. and they can basically look at a human and tell whether or not that person is sane, insane, dangerous, sociopathic, truthful, etc. So I'd feel much safer and happier partying like that with aliens than I think I would with my fellow humans.)

dude, that sounds awesome. many of the burners i've met make me uneasy, but maybe i'm paranoid. my sense of people isn't great, but i have been really lucky in who i hang out with.

i think i'd like to live in the Terre d'Ange (Kushiel's Dart) or the Three Countries (the Otori trilogy)

I haven't read the Otori books, I'll have to check them out. I liked the Kushiel books, but not enough to want to live there. I'm not good with aristocracies or religious stuff. Or feudalism. I used to think Pern was awesome...and it is, if you are a dragonrider, lord holder, or master bard. However, the majority of ppl on Pern are manual laborers. And women's roles are pretty limited, even female dragonriders. So..nevermind on that. :P

oh, and did I mention the 'fountains of youth' on Gaia? Just hop intoa nice warm pool of honey like goo and come out young, fit n healthy! Awesome!

And it apparently rebuilds and rejuvenates your tattoos!

(One of my favorite series, by the way.)

The tattoo thing was pretty wierd & interesting. And made me wonder what other man made desirable and/or undesirable modifications the fountain would 'fix' or 'undo'....?

My favorite of the Gaia genre is David Brin's Earth :

I've not read Varley's trilogy, I'll have to look that up.
