The Machine Stops, by E M Forster. I'm using a machine that will not let me cut n paste, but you can google it. Written over 100 years ago, it really captures the impersonal 'busyness' of modern life--you've got over 100 LJ friends but no one to help you move, or get coffee with....

quality time is certainly the crux of the matter. I know plenty of people who are 'too busy' rushing from one thing to the next, their lives are certainly full, but all that busy does not allow them to make sincere friendships or have real experiences...but that seems to be their preference, despite lip service to stuff about 'wanting to spend more time and get to know you better'... Seems that the more leisure time humans have, the further we get from what we need in order to survive, the more shallow and pointless our lives become. Unlike the world of 1984, govt doesnt have to outlaw love, the media and corporations just give us so many entertaining distractions, we don't even know what the word even really means, let alone how to do it.
