Last Thursday, I went to The Screaming Goat with [livejournal.com profile] dree & her husband. I saw a drink on the menu that I'd never heard of, "Jamaica"...I figured it might be a coffee drink, but when I asked the guy gave me a sample of a wonderful, dark red, sweet & tart substance. I ordered a glass and enjoyed the heck out of it. (thought it might be good with rum)

Further research shows that "Jamaica" is a Mexican beverage made from Hibiscus flowers ("Jamaica" in Spanish="Hibiscus")

It is yummy yummy.

I found that I had a box of hibiscus rasberry tea bags at home, purchased for the rasberry when I was searching for solutions to my girly problems....lo and behold, when it is sweetened and served with ice, it's Jamaica!

(It is also good for you.)

WHEE!

You can get jamaica from klass in the powdered form kinda like koolaid, with and with out sugar pre-added. You can also make it like sun tea but it tends to turn bad quicker than tea does.

I have some flowers if you want to try something with them tonight. They are about 6.99 for a bag that is about half a pound-ish.

Good to know. I could drink a lot of this stuff, but maybe still not a good idea to try and do up a big sun tea jar of it, if it's just going to go bad.

I absolutely love Jamaica. In fact when we went to eat food for your bday dinner, that is what I was *trying* to get.

I have gone through steady Jamaica withdrawal since leaving California. Its seriously...so good.

the HEB brand 'rasberry hibiscus' tea makes a pretty good Jamaica, IMHO. Not that I have vast experiences with the beverage (yet) but I thought it was pretty similar to the beverage I had at the screaming goat. Just not quite as sweet (which is good, for me.)

You know what's really cool about sun tea jars, you can also make iced coffee with it (you can buy a tea back sock, or just filter the grinds when you are done). I swear, it's like the best iced coffee you've ever had. I don't even put milk or sugar in it and I hate black coffee hot.

I also really like iced peppermint tea. The stronger the better.

I love coffee & iced coffee...but I'm off sugar and caffeine for a bit. :) Definitely something to keep in mind, though!
