Personally, I hate most of the crap people say about God.

"It's God's will"

"God doesn't give you anything you can't handle."

and the like.

It makes me picture God as some sadistic, pimply teenage geek, just poking away at us poor little amoebas in His petri dish, torturing and killing us for no good reason except for that "dur-hurr hurr hurr" hyena-like belly laugh as He pushes up His big black taped-up glasses.

I, personally, would prefer not to think of God that way.

I'd rather think that Shit Happens and that it's not the specific Will of an Omnicient, Omnibenevolent Being who loves us all and takes personal interest in each and every one of us, that people and animals and plants suffer and die in horrible ways.

I would rather just think that God is not all that wrapped up in our every day stuff, not that He specificially willed something horrible to happen.

I guess we never really know...but that's my preference, to believe that God isn't actively a complete bastard. More like He just left his aquarium to fend for itself for a few millenia while he was at GodDisney with His parents.

Mine is "Everything happens for a reason."

I hate that one too...it is even vague-r than "Gods Will" and just as annoying.

No, really, sometimes Shit Just Happens, and there's no reason for it at all.

I suppose it could be comforting if you believed that if you put up with so much crap in this life, you get a bucket of gold and heavenly choirs and 70 virgins in the next...but come on....that's just dumb.

Yeah, we just can't trace back to it with confidence because we don't have a good enough understanding of quantum uncertainty.

Deism in a nutshell.

The perceived malevolence and sadism is, for me, a strong argument against Intelligent Design, or Intelligent Design is a strong argument for the Abrahamic God being a prick.

cool

That is perfectly articulated.

I've certainly noticed a tendency that, when you've had to deal with more than a little bit of shit 'that God thinks you can handle', tends to create atheists, or at least people who have knee jerk reactions to religion of any stripe.

Mostly because of the idea that religious nuts have that God does everything, and for reasons too.

a similar phrase i find very comforting when i'm stressed is "earth will deliver what heaven desires". western fiction writer, buddhist character speaking the line...

probably it's along the same lines of "God made it happen".. but for some reason it's more detached... like the gods/heaven will give us good stuff down the line too--you just have to endire this shit right now.

anyway, can *i* go to GodDisney?

I personally hate "look to the cross". I'm so glad I avoid Evangelicals like the plague because next time I hear that, I'm gonna reply "Look to your shoes. I just puked on them"

"Looks like you've got your hands full!"

ARGH. Just, do us all a favor, and never, ever, EVER say this to a woman out with twins, triplets or an evidently disabled child, m'kay? We've heard it too many effin' times already, and some days we want to strangle whomever has just said it to us.

That reminds me of this article about how harmful repeating such supposedly comforting catchphrases to people in need or in grief can be.

I read this, good article. Strange, isn't it, how well meaning people would often times be more effective by just keeping their mouths closed and listening, instead of opening mouths and inserting foots ?

GodDisney ?? ha ha ha haaaaa

Good post. I wrote something about the equally annoying spiritual hoohah "everything happens for a reason." Probably, deep down, I'd like to believe like you that God isn't an asshole. But I'm not so convinced anymore.
