Re: item #3 -- Indeed. Basically, look at a graph of the S&P500 for the past 10 to 20 (or more) years, and get into your head that its not a get-rich-quick scheme.
Of course, I wonder how it looks when adjusted for inflation. Yeah, the index may be much higher than it was, but how much weaker has the dollar become during that time? Stupid inflation...
