McCain believes we can 'win' the 'war' in Iraq by 2013.

that's cool, considering the world's gonna end in 2012 anyway.

I really enjoy knowing that after 5 years we can "win" this war. Considering WWII was shorter: The war against Germany lasted 1,245 days, from Dec. 11, 1941, (when both nations declared war) until May 8, 1945. The war against Japan from Dec. 7, 1941, until Aug. 15, 1945, lasted somewhat longer--1,348 days*. I can't think of a good viable reason - based in common sense and reality -at this point why a full withdrawal hasn't taken place.
Then again, McCain is an optimist. Or he knows something we don't...

Two questions:

1) Do you really want the answers?

2) Does E want to have such a discussion on her LJ.

As long as everyone can refrain from personal attacks, I am all for whatever debate comes up.

I'll give the short version due to apparent lack of interest.

Giving up now will result in exactly the same situation that happened in Afghanistan when the Soviets up and ran. The extremist nutcases bullied their way into power and launched a terror campaign against the rest of the world.

If we let the insane zealots do their own thing (like we did for most of the 90's) there will be an attack that will make Sept 11 2001 look like a Sunday School picnic.

What worries me is that McCain *does* have military experience, so I'd trust his time-line more than, say, that of Little AWOL Bush.

I just don't think this thing was thought out, we didn't have good reasons to go in, we don't have clear objectives now, and we aren't all agreed on what constitutes a "win" in the middle east.

And nobody in this country has a single clue about the mindset of people with centuries-long memory of hostility between their various families, clans, towns, etc. Theyr'e fighting battles now with bombs & guns that their great-great-great-greats started by throwing rocks at another guy's goats. We just don't have that kind of historical memory here in the states, at all. Nor do most of us have the hard-line religious morality that would allow us to stone someone to death for their ancestor throwing rocks at our ancestor's goat 300 years ago.

In short: they're crazy and hold mega grudges, and we're just stupid.
