Hippie dipshits...
Jun. 8th, 2007 03:33 pmwell, Hopedance Magazine had me with their issue #57, but then they pretty much lost me with this book review in which they say:
In another section, Philadelphia neighbors “reclaim” a park from what they call “the element” – “prostitutes and pushers.” While the space they have created, lush with flowers and trees, sounds beautiful, the notion of “cleaning up” a neighborhood by displacing some of the most marginalized people within it does not. Because this process is described uncritically in a book that also includes several mentions of residents working closely with police to improve their neighborhoods, the allegiance of the authors to dominant, and oppressive, systems seems clear.
I have no words. Because raising children around pimps and druggies is so much healthier than raising them near parks filled with flowers and food? Oh, wah, so we marginalize addicts and scumbags? Boo fucking hoo.

Date: 2007-06-08 10:44 pm (UTC)Some of these more whacked-out liberals strike me as the sorts who will go on and on about the plight of the disadvantaged people of color, but wouldn't want said disadvantaged people of color moving in next door...
dipshits.

Date: 2007-06-09 12:11 am (UTC)My mom told me about some folks who organized a needle exchange program, and wanted to put one of the exchange points in a neighborhood that didn't want it. The mothers in the neighborhood had spent several years trying to drive out the druggies and had finally succeeded.
The idiots did the needle exchange thing there anyway, and all the hard work of those poor mothers was undone in a matter of months.
No clue as to what people actually want for their kids. Just lump "disadvantaged" into one big category and ignore the fact that some of the "disadvantaged" are working very hard to improve things, and others aren't giving a rat's ass and shitting in the kitchen.
