this post really speaks to my fears about AA--that it's a cult, that it pushes God/monotheism/religion on you, and that it replaces one form of pathology with another.

I'm also having problems with the 'slogans'...some of them seem very 1984 or Brave New World, in that they really don't make a whole hell of a lot of sense without the brainwashing/indoctrination/whatever. They are not really complete thoughts, ya know?

Anyway...I'm not completely done with exploring Alanon. I'll try the 6 meetings and then make up my mind. (Assuming I still have a mind to make up at that point...)

I have heard (and this is just heresay) that there are nonsmoking AA meetings and AA for atheists. You're not an atheist, but finding a group like that would definitely free you from the militant monotheism cult that AA really is.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to help you find such groups.

I'm going to go to the suggested 6 meetings, and then see what I think.

The Human Potential Center has workshops that sound helpful, too, so I'm going to also watch their calendar.

This is gonna happen for me, whatever it takes to clean house and be sane.

I don't have cable, so I have seen all of maybe three south park episodes, ever...I really hated the first one I saw, but it's kind of grown on me. I'll have to keep an eye out for it when it goes to DVD at Encore or whatever.
