A ball is in your court sort of message might be good. Something that indicates your willingness to hear him out, but making it fairly clear that he's got to lead the way, i.e., he opened this can of worms, so let's see what he's willing to do to tidy it up.
Yeah, all of that back stuff sounds pretty dodgy to me, too. I loathe manipulative women. Women (notable male examples such as Wisco John notwithstanding) seem to have a monopoly on this sorta crap.
