Most of it is pretty godawful. Do fanfic writers not use spell and/or grammar check? And of course the mary-sue stuff can get really overwhelming and provide shall we say...a bit too much of a glimpse into the author's psyche? (Then again, that's a risk of any writing, but fanfic and role-play writing seem especially so. I mean, really, is there nothing your half elf whatever cannot do? Does *anyone* else in the group get to make a meaningful contribution to the storyline, other than fawning and/or polite applause every time your character does another amazing thing? bleh.)
There is some that is really hot; I really enjoyed some Xmen fanfic I found online after the first Xmen movie and some Darth Maul kinky-sex fanfic I ran across a few yrs ago, after the first prequel came out.
And some is truly hideous and awful. There isn't enough brain bleach in the world to rid me of the Han Solo/Darth Vader rape scene I once read...it will haunt me to the end of my days. Star Wars slash is just wrong, wrong, wrong. As misogynistic and wierd as he is, Lucas' universe is 100% hetero. So...yeah, best to just stay away from fanfic. and bad roleplay writing. often rather one and the same, the more I think about it.
Of course, regular store-bought/checked-out-from-library fiction is often rather awful these days...chick-lit and all the Anita Blake wannabes are especially dreadful. I guess on the plus side, if Emma Holly can get published, ANYONE can.
