This article is for anyone who is sick of being overweight and wants
to shed those unwanted pounds. It is written in a tough-love style
that will hopefully provoke you to wake-up and re-frame the way you
have thought about weight loss. Once this occurs, you may actually be
able to change your body as well as your mind. Let's start with what
may sound like a strange question.
Why do you want to be fat?
I know you have been trying to lose weight for years, you hate being
overweight and you probably think I am a nut case for even suggesting
that you "want" to be fat. But, hang in there for just a moment and
give me a chance. Besides, isn't it true that your way of thinking
about weight loss has not worked so far? So, maybe there is something
new to consider? Here it is.
Every individual's behavior is driven by two sources: Their conscious
mind and their unconscious mind. When we experience constant failure
at changing something that our conscious mind wants to change (losing
weight), we can make great progress by considering the effects of our
unconscious mind.
Your conscious mind is telling you that you hate the weight and that
you want and need to drop the pounds. But, for some unknown reason,
you have an impossible time following through. You try to diet and
exercise and then you fail and blame yourself for being undisciplined
or lazy. Then I show up and tell you that "you want to stay fat," and
you think I'm nuts.
Well, I am not nuts, and I really am telling you that you want that
fat to stay on your body. However, I am also telling you that it is
your unconscious mind that wants you to keep the weight on. Your
unconscious mind clearly has more power over your life than you
realized. It is currently overriding your conscious efforts to lose
weight, and you need to pay attention to its messages in order to
reach your conscious weight loss goals.
The second fact I want you to know is this: Your unconscious mind has
very good reasons for wanting you to stay fat. It will continue to
resist your weight loss efforts until you discover its reasons and
attend to them. Then you will be free to lose that weight that has
plagued you for years.
Here are some examples of why your unconscious mind may want to keep
you fat: You may fear your sexual energy. You may have been raped,
and fat protects you from men. Your self-esteem may be very low, and
you might actually feel undeserving of weight loss. Your fat may be a
way of resisting the growing up process (baby fat), because adulthood
seems frightening. You may believe that losing weight might require
you to make other scary or painful choices and changes (divorce,
change jobs, lose friends). Weight loss may require you to accept
more challenges or responsibilities, so staying fat may be a form of
safety.
There are many reasons your unconscious mind may want to protect you
by keeping you fat. If you have tried to lose weight a number of
times and failed, then you are an excellent candidate for inner work
and self-discovery. Your unconscious reasons for staying fat can be
identified and managed or healed. Then your inner and outer desires
will not conflict, and you can drop your unwanted weight.
The choice is yours! You can face the fact that your way of doing
weight loss has not worked for you and open up to a new technique, or
you can hold to the old beliefs of your conscious mind and continue
to produce old results (fat). Will it be easy for you to change? No,
it won't. But, it will be worth it, and you will be worth it. Inner
work will help you shed much more weight than just fat, and you may
discover that your entire life gets "lighter" and happier. If you
