Nemisii
Recent events have caused me to meditate on the archetype of The
Nemisis.
There are two kinds of people that annoy us in this world: those we
banish, and those that we can't banish, that we remain in community
with over time. There could be many factors that cause this to
happen, but it happens. And when it does, a noble nemesis can become
as meaningful as a sweet lover, dear friend, blood relative; we
connect to them in a deep rooted way and when they are gone, it
leaves a hole in our world, and maybe in our heart.
I've had ample cause to reflect on this recently, as I considered the
curious fact of who shows up at wakes and memorials. In both Oakland
and Austin, I was surprised by who showed up. It was naive of me. One
doesn't get to choose one's trickster guru. And no one knows what's
written in another man's ledger.
I also observe that the most intense nemesii come from unresolved
hurts, sometimes very small things, that grow in importance over
time, like a would left to fester. Inner children indeed.
