Please forgive my peculiar talent for pointing out the obvious.
If we want amenities such as showers, a large enough feast hall (over
100 people), and the ability to rent the entire site (so as not to
freak the mundanes), as already astutely observed by Bearclaw, that
leaves out State parks altogether. Burnet County Fairgrounds, where
previous CRWS were held, is also out, as in, out of business (bidness
for you native Texans).
By process of elimination, this leaves private sites. Private sites
with the above referenced amenities do cost more than State Parks and
the now defunct Burnet County Fairgrounds. So, if we insist on the
above amenities, we should not moan, bitch and flame over the cost.
"Lead, follow or get the hell out of the way" and "Anyone who is not
part of the solution is part of the problem" (sources unknown). Those
of us to whom showers and feast halls with capacities of more than
100 people, and those of us to whom cost control is a concern, should
actively help find sites that take both factors into account. For
example, I would like a CRW site that is not just pet friendly but
horse-friendly. To that end, I have already done my research and
provided a list of such sites. This job ain't easy, folks, and anyone
who thinks they can do better should perhaps put up or shut
up...<prepares to duck>

Objectives for finding a CRW Park. These are listed in order of
importance (as I see it anyway).
Somewhat Equidistant between McAllen & Dallas --- These (with the
exception to groups outside Texas) are our "Outside Edge" groups.
With an 11-13 hour drive from one another, with San Antonio/Austin
being the half way point between the two, you are severely limiting
attendance if you have the event too far away from one or the other,
as Silver Spire (McAllen) makes up for a very large percentage of the
attendance at any given CRW, and Bhurtok/Challain/Calinorn, making up
another smaller but needed number of people. We can not afford to
ostrasize any group.
Can accomodate around 120 people. --- If the site can not accomodate
this many people, then you can not have an event. CRW is our largest
event, and the average attendance, I believe, stands at around 120
members and guests.
Feast Hall/Kitchen --- One of the big things with any event is Court
& Feast. Not the most popular part for the stick jocks, but almost
considered a necessity of running an "Interkingdom" event, IE:
multiple kingdoms are in attendance.
Decent size usable field for the games --- We have in the past had
nice fields for CRW, as far as size goes anyway. This last year, the
field was kind of small, but fun because it forced you to always be
engaged in combat. Everyone was in range of arrows, and flanking was
difficult. Very fun. Small fields can be good, but a large field is
enjoyed by many as well. The field we had last year was the smallest
I could see us ever using for CRW.
Missile Weapon Allowance --- Some citys and parks do not allow the
use of Bows. Bows have become incresingly more popular over the years
in HFS that I have enjoyed, and if they are not allowed, then you end
up with quite a few disgruntled people.
Price --- Some would put this as the first priority, but without the
above, you may as well not spend the money in the first place. If
people can not afford to go, IE:$30.00 entrance fees coupled with an
$80.00 drive in gas money alone, it turns into a very expensive
weekend, and you will find your members just going to their own park
that weekend, holding their own, or spending the weekend at an
Amtgard event.
Proximity to a grocery store & food. --- Important for the people
running feast. If 90 people register, and 160 show up at the gate,
they are going to have to boogie. Having to drive for 45 minutes as
an emergency food run is not a good way to spend cooking time.
Fighters and other participants many times rely on fast food during
the weekend, rather than packing ice chests and stoves and cooking
gear in their cars. Camp food --- BLEH!
Showers --- Hard core role players and people who are generally
unclean, will not mind the lack of showers. The rest of us will enjoy
the night at a hotel, or be invading other members hotel rooms in the
morning for that shower! Getting in your nice clean sheets while
covered by an inch of sweat and sand from an 8 hour ditch battle and
8 hours of battle games makes me feel like hammered bat dung. It is
not pleasent. Then that fuzzy toothed grimy feeling in the morning
after... Yuck! These sentiments will be echoed by more members in HFS
than anyone really cares to believe. It can hurt attendance.
Camp sites with Electricity & Water --- Not a neccisity - only a
luxury. I enjoy using my fan or space heater during extreme weather,
but it is not really necesarry if there is a shower available.
Pet allowance --- The last thing we need to worry about. I like to
take my dogs, so that I don't have to pawn the little jerks off on my
parents or spend a 100 dollar kenel fee for the weekend, but my
parents will take them if I ask, and it is only a distraction for my
fighting to have them there. I see them every day of my life, I get
to fight once a weekend, and CRW once a year, I think a weekend away
from the animals is something that will not make me cry personally. I
think this is the last thing that needs consideration when picking a
park for CRW.
The lack of mundania. --- This is an afterthought due to the fact
that mundanes are acceptable, as we bring our own guests and all. As
long as we have our own field, and not biking and jogging trails as
our primary field, we will be fine if there are mundanes. Im sure
others will disagree, but there it is.
Gabriel.
I dreamt that mom was getting married. There was this big blonde lady
who was telling me what to say, since I was 'giving the bride away'
for some reason.
All the wedding guests were in this big house. I found this 'dorm
room' kind of place that had beds, showers, and laundry in one big
long room.
X and kids were there, I hadn't met the groom's family yet and she
was telling them all these salacious stories from my Tulane days &
using all this foul language. I was so embarassed, I didn't say
anything to any of them, I just left.
Turns out I was wearing the only dress I'd brought, so I had to wash
the dress to wear in the wedding the next day. The washers & driers
in the "dorm" were very small.
The alarm went off as I was washing the dress. It was the green linen
one I wore to Thanksgiving.
