580 sad..

Well, we went out to the Ritz customer appreciation party, after a
particularly challenging morning of nude yoga. Rod brought veggies
from the organic garden where he works. Lonnie invited me to smoke
with him after class. I declined, since I had to go drink beer & all.

So...there was this woman out there, Juliana, with 8 puppies. She had
a dog who had a litter of 11, and had stopped feeding them at 3
weeks. 1 died in my lap out at the lake. She gave 1 away. We took 1
home, one that is sort of chocolate lab looking (they are lab-
rottweiler mix). Took puppy to the vet yesterday, he was dehydrated &
wormy. They gave him fluids under the skin, gave me worm medicine &
vitamins & told me to get puppy formula and try the gerber veal baby
    food.

He ate the veal, but threw it up later and hasn't had much appetite
ever since. Sunday night to Monday morning, he was waking up every 2
hours, very hungry, very interested in eating. Last night, he woke up
at 3, 4, and 5. 3, I gave him some pedialyte in a syringe, but he
didn't seem thirsty or hungry, went to sleep after a little petting.
4 am, he had made a mess in his carrier. I changed the toweling &
gave him some pedialyte. 5am, I gave him his vitamins, chicken baby
food and some puppy formula in a syringe, since he wouldn't suck on
his bottle. He threw up. I gave him a little more, but he wasn't much
interested and I didn't want to make him sicker.

The vet wants him back at 9 to give more subcutaneous fluids. I don't
think he's going to make it. I am sad, but kind of relieved. Eris
HATES the puppy and hates us for bringing it, is running around
hissing and being terrible. The puppy is already alot of work, and
will just be more work the older he gets.

I imagine the vet will probably tell Tom the puppy needs to be put on
IV fluids. I don't know what Tom will decide. I am glad it is not up
to me at this point...it is sad, and I almost don't want to write
about it. I know I won't want to read this ever again. Poor puppy. No
more critters for us, it is just too sad to lose them.

I took a sick day yesterday, despite the certain knowledge that
certain of my coworkers would say snide things about it behind my
    back.

Too much sun and beer on Tuesday, not enough water. Not to mention
wine with dinner, staying up till after midnight, and the ever-
    present allergy headache.

I don't know why I care what the hell those harpies think of me. I
needed to sleep and get over my hangover/allergies and that's what I
    did.

Also...we did a dumb thing. We adopted a puppy. One of the other
people at the Ritz customer appreciation party brough 8 puppies. 3
weeks old, and mom-dog had decided to quit feeding them. They were
all so very cute. She had lost 2 from dehydration, and actually one
died in my lap right there on the shore of the lake...and then we
took one home. He had a good appetite on Sunday night, seemed to be
doing ok. Took him to the vet yesterday, he got vitamins and worm
medicine and a subcutaneous fluid injection to help rehydrate him.
The vet recommended a certain brand of puppy formula (we'd been
giving him Carnation good starts) and Gerber baby veal instead of
baby ham that we'd been giving him.

Took him home, gave him his worm medicine, got him all settled in,
and went off for Gerber baby veal. About an hour later, he was
happily playing in his plate of veal, and about a half an hour after
that, he yarfed it up. And hasn't been keeping much down since then.
I don't think he's going to make it. I don't even want to write this
because I don't want to read it again after he's gone.

I keep hearing various squealing noises from machines in the office
and thinking they are puppy-whining. In only 2 nights, I've become
very tuned in to puppy noises. I wake up and feed, water, pet, clean
up, do whatever. Sunday night, he was waking up hungry every 2 hours,
eating very well, sucking strongly on my fingers when he couldn't
find the bottle. Last night I had to put droppers full of stuff into
his mouth and force feed him.
