At Eeyore's last year, in keeping with my Gypsy character, I gave tarot & astrology readings ("fortune telling"). These were given for free but everyone I read for insisted rather emphatically on "tipping" or "donating" money for the reading. In this unexpected way, I managed singlehandedly to contribute 30% of the funds raised by Barad Duin at Eeyore's.
Kumpania Tale'Sedra performed and vended at Ingleside Ren Faire this past weekend. We raised a surprising amount of money with what was comparatively very little effort.
What we did: gave children rides on the horses, let them interact with Arthurbird, did tarot & astrology readings, sold Arthur feathers and earrings. In character, this was the Gypsies "kidnapping children" or in the words of the immortal Captain Jack Sparrow "borrowing them without permission". Although technically of course we did have permission in form of a legal liability waiver. We did not charge for the rides, yet people insisted again on tipping and giving donations. At which point we wisely (at the astute suggestion of evilE) put a tip/donation bucket - as my garb had no pockets LOL - and the tips and donations increased. The SCA also brought their horses and were selling rides, which they found to be an effective fund raiser for many years now. Interestingly, we made more money by accepting donations and tips without asking, than the SCA did with a set asking price per ride.
I spent many hours on the drive home thinking of ways to improve the fund raising process. And my sister in law, evilE (aka Eek, Generika), did the same, but much better (which is par for the course :-). I won't share them here because I don't have her permission to do so; so I will just say that as usual her ideas rock. Anyone interested should ask her to share them. Go to one of her parties, attend an event with her, or spend any amount of time in her presence and you'll see what I mean.
We may have inadvertently hit upon a few good ways to raise money. So I would like to offer Drandmir and the rest of the Combined Realms the services of the Kumpania for the purposes of fund raising.
I had such a good time with you (and so did sineater and sonar0m), thank you. I thought of improvements on the way home too. Talked to the SCA woman and we are combining efforts last year. Talked to many vendors and have some interesting tidbits of information there, remind me to share them when we next talk.
As usual your ideas are more in depth and better than my basic, simplistic ones. I apologize in advance because I just now made some posts about fund raising to Drandmir, HFSIC, hfscr.org and Chaos which reference you, but I did not disclose your ideas without permission. I hope I am forgiven if I stepped on toes inadvertently, did not mean to.
